Don’t you hate that most waffle irons only make one waffle? What if several people want a hot waffle? What if you want to sit down with your family and eat instead of serving waffles one by one? Then you definitely need a double waffle iron! The Double Flip Black and Decker seems like a good place to start, so let’s have a look!
Black & Decker’s Double Flip Waffle Maker makes two full-size Belgian waffles at the same time and starts at around $35 (see here for current prices!). That’s a pretty high price for a car that makes twice as much waffles as the other 35 dollars! And besides the great price, you get a super famous brand with the Black and Decker device.
The Double Flip has two separate Belgian waffle irons for baking, a comfortable drip tray and cool, touch-sensitive handles. If you hurry to the kitchen and grab the waffle iron, don’t worry, they won’t burn you! The indicator light indicates when the waffle iron is hot and ready to distribute. So what happens when we actually test the Black and Decker waffle iron? Watch our video below or read on!
No longer in box
Straight out of the box, a black and white waffle iron with a tray and a double flip was not disappointing. The waffle iron was very strong, not brittle and not cheap at all, but all the black metal and plastic made it nice and smooth in my kitchen.
There is no display of the set temperature or cooking time, only an indicator light indicating when the unit is warmed up. That’s fine if you’re looking for a very simple waffle iron – not much to do!
The handle of the waffle iron is made of plastic, which according to Black and Decker is a piece of cake. The handle is also locked when you turn the waffle iron to fill the other side – no dough is spilled here! And speaking of spilt dough: There is a removable tray that can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher – you must love the easy cleaning! (If you compulsively clean your waffle iron, take a look at our cleaning blog here).
After reading the Black and Deck Double Flip manual (yes, I’ve read the manual!), he says you should lubricate the waffle iron before using it. I rubbed both waffle irons with vegetable oil and hoped that this would prevent my waffles from sticking! Kitchen sprayers, like Crisco Butter No-Stick, should also work well.
It’s a bit disappointing that the waffle iron itself is not sticky, but hey, if the vegetable oil works, I’m fine! You may prefer a non-stick waffle iron – some of the chemicals in the Teflon coating are ready for a debate about their health benefits.
Baking TWO Belgian Waffles
The waffle iron had warmed up in about 4 minutes, then a nice green light came on that told me it was hot and ready! It took about half a cup of our incredible waffle dough to fill the waffle iron. I closed the waffle iron, waited ten seconds for instructions and turned it around to fill the other side. I closed the doorknob again and waited… …waiting patiently.
When I opened the first page, an all golden waffle looked right at me! It easily came out of the waffle iron (thanks to the vegetable oil!) and left no damage behind. When I looked at the other side of the waffle, it was much darker and sharper than the top.
The base plate on which the waffle dough rested quickly turned brown. This is a good thing to keep in mind because there is no temperature control or timer for the lights – check the bottom of the waffle, not just the top, to see if it’s ready!
I quickly turned around and opened a second waffle, which on one side looked exactly like the first one and on the other side was crispy. However, I had two identical waffles on the same frame, as promised by Black and Decker Double Flip. If my family were here, I could serve two people at the same time without waiting, but since I was the only one at home, I can now eat two Belgian waffles (and they are made with Crown Bourbon maple syrup …). Psst, don’t tell me!
- Two large Belgian waffles in the time normally needed to make a waffle.
- A machine that is easy to use, without superfluous frills
- Favourable price for a double waffle mill
- -transparent for cleaning and storage
- There is no light to see when the waffles are made, so it really takes time.
- The lower part of the waffle bakes much faster than the upper part, making one side of the waffle extra crispy while the other side is barely cooked.
The Double Flip waffle iron from Black and Decker is very good value for money and makes it possible to quickly make two large Belgian waffles. The waffle iron itself is not too big and unmanageable, so it can easily be stored in a small space and you can take it out, put it in and eat the waffles in a few minutes. And isn’t that the ultimate goal?
Although I like to make a few small additions (no chopstick holders and a light that tells me when the waffles are made), Black and Decker’s no-nonsense approach, this waffle iron is really easy to use – our blog about things to consider when buying a waffle iron will help you decide what features you want. If you are looking for two well-prepared waffles in a short period of time, you should have a try on this waffle iron. Still undecided?
